Green cardamom (scientific name: Elettaria cardamomum) is a highly aromatic spice native to the Western Ghats of southern India. It belongs to the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) and is often referred to as the “Queen of Spices.” Widely used in both culinary and medicinal contexts, it is prized for its sweet, complex aroma and flavor.

    Size:

    Shape:

    Small, triangular to oval-shaped capsule (pod).

    Pod has longitudinal ridges and is slightly curved.


    Color:

    Fresh green pods have a bright to pale green hue.

    Faded or yellowish pods may indicate age or inferior quality.

    Inside, the pod contains small black or brown seeds, which hold most of the flavor.


    Grades and Quality

    Top Quality (8 mm and above): Uniform green color, plump, and aromatic.

    Medium Quality: Lighter color, may be thinner or shorter.

    Low Quality: Pale, shriveled pods with fewer seeds and diminished aroma.
